Spectacular Mobile Rig Frontages

What do DJs enjoy apart from getting paid for doing something they love? Looking at other DJ rigs and equipment!

In this months edition we are taking a look at some different approaches to building a show that is both practical and eye catching.

A massive thank you goes to three AMPdj members for allowing us to feature their very individual and amazing setups; Mike Newell - Spectrum Disco, Nainesh Patel - Musical Movements and Mal Williams - Pro-Disco.

Unfortunately DJ Hank heard what we were planning and insisted we include him...so we'll apologise now! DJ Hank has seen a preview and concluded that he needs to do some work; you'll see what we mean when you scroll to the bottom!

Nainesh Patel - Musical Movements

Since winning the Kiss 100 DJ competition in 2006, Nainesh has continued to innovate with his mobile disco business. He has also performed internationally in Ibiza and India, and is scheduled for Miami, Cyprus and Bali later this year.

Musical Movements

His rig design needs to be practical for video mixing and have an air of sophistication to match his DJ presentation. It consists of a custom made DJ console holding 2 turntables and 2 CDJs as well as the mixer. A 50inch plasma screen can be used to either stream images or for live video mixing. Standing proudly on either side are 4 moving heads controlled by an intelligent lighting system. To complete the scene, a fibre optic starcloth is used as a backdrop. It takes Nainesh and his team 45 minutes to set the rig up.

Nainesh says, "I always wanted to bring something different when it comes to set up. I believe the overall look and image of the rig is very important and allows us to stand out . We also offer the flexibility of what a client wants".

Mal Williams - Pro-Disco

Mal is a seasoned DJ with over twenty years in the mobile disco industry. From a club background of performing to crowds of 4000 at the "Top Rank"/"Mecca Mayfair", he has honed his skills to be a leading performer in the wedding and corporate market.

Mal Williams

Mal has a truly unique screen fronting his rig. There's no other like it; probably because not all of us have the patience to sit for three weeks sticking 500 individual tiny mirrors onto a board. One of the biggest hurdles in its construction was finding a back board that was durable, rigid and not too heavy (especially as Mal is a MOBILE DJ).

It is fitted with a heavy duty castor 'roll in and roll out' system that can be tucked out of the way during a performance. The screen is double hinged to enable it to be folded inwards to protect the many, many mirrors, but also folds back on itself to be half a screen when the venue calls for a smaller set up. When extended, it is a formidable 9 feet wide. The front sign-age is a multi-colour backlit laser cut sign with a remote PSU. It cost £750 to construct.

Mal says, "The front screen is multi functional; it keeps wandering children safe from wires and plugs and also provides a great visual display which guests notice and also the screen tends to end up on the wedding disco pictures... one of the many good reasons why Pro-Disco makes the front screen look sensational".

Mike Newell - Spectrum Disco

Mike has a wealth of experience in the mobile DJ industry presenting at parties and a whole host of different occasions and celebrations. With his large awesome rig, he amazes audiences with both visuals and sound.

Spectrum Disco

Mike's inspiration for his frontage came from a need to be different and stand out. The rig incorporates a 42" TV screen with an aluminium surround to protect it during the night. This was outsourced and custom made by a local company. It is flanked by 2 LED lighting panels and 2 flame effects. In addition he flies two smaller screens to maximise visibility of video effects. The whole rig takes Mike an hour to set up.

Mike says, "Although we cannot charge a lot more for the extra effects it gives us the edge over conventional set ups. We can also play customer's photo images through the screens and also themes for different events".

And finally...
DJ Hank..... I'm lost for words!

DJ Hank

Once again, a special thank you to Mal, Nainesh and Mike. Till next time....
